Three kinds of rim damage

Dubai car parks are designed around tight kerbs, and mall basements have concrete edges painted the same grey as the floor. Most rim damage we see comes from parking, not driving. The repair depends entirely on which of these three you have.

Cosmetic repair: kerb rash and scratches

Kerb rash is the most common job. The workshop strips the damaged area, fills deep gouges, sands it smooth and repaints or refinishes the face to match. Painted alloys, which cover most Camry, Corolla, Patrol and Land Cruiser wheels, are the most straightforward. Two-tone diamond-cut wheels, common on BMW, Range Rover and newer Hyundai and Kia models, need a lathe to re-cut the bright face after painting, so the workshop will tell you upfront if your wheel needs that step.

A cosmetic repair changes how the wheel looks, not how it performs. If your only concern is appearance before selling or returning a lease car, this is the repair you need.

Bent rims

A bent rim usually comes from a pothole, a speed bump taken too fast, or a sharp kerb strike. The tell-tale signs are a vibration that balancing does not fix, or a tyre that slowly loses pressure because the bead no longer seals. Low-profile tyres on 19 to 22-inch rims protect the rim far less than a tall sidewall, so cars like the BMW X5, Range Rover Sport and Mercedes GLE are especially prone.

The workshop mounts the wheel on a rim-straightening machine, measures the runout, and uses controlled heat and hydraulic pressure to bring it back true. The tyre is then refitted and balanced. Not every bend can be fixed: if the metal has been stretched too far or is close to a spoke, straightening it can introduce a crack. In that case you get a replacement recommendation rather than a risky repair.

Cracked rims

A crack is a structural problem. Some cracks on the inner barrel can be welded by a specialist, but a weld changes the properties of the alloy around it, and a crack near a spoke or the hub mount is not something we will put back on a car. The partner workshop inspects the crack, explains the options and, if needed, sources a matching replacement rim. Your safety is worth more than the cost of the wheel.

How the service works

1. Send photos of the damaged wheel on WhatsApp, including a close-up and one of the whole wheel.
2. For cosmetic damage we give you a price from the photos. For bends and cracks we arrange an inspection at a partner workshop.

Lease returns and car sales

Leasing companies and dealers in Dubai inspect wheels closely at the end of a contract or a trade-in, and kerb rash on all four rims can add up to a noticeable deduction. Keeping rims undamaged

• Keep pressures at the door-placard value. An under-inflated low-profile tyre lets the rim hit potholes and kerbs far more easily. Our tyre pressure guide covers UAE-specific settings.
• Approach mall ramps and basement kerbs slowly and at an angle.
• Fold the passenger mirror down when reversing into tight bays; it shows you the kerb.
• Check for vibration after any hard hit. A bent rim that is caught early is easier to straighten than one driven on for months.
