Run-flat tyres
Run-flat tyres: how they work, what they cost and when to replace
Run-flats let you keep driving after a puncture, but they behave differently from normal tyres when it comes to repair, replacement and fitting. Here is what UAE drivers need to know.
- Run-flats from AED 500
- Fitted where you park
- Bridgestone, Pirelli, Michelin
Run-flat tyres
The short answer
Run-flat tyres from 800 Tyres start at AED 500 per tyre, fitted at your location in Dubai, Sharjah or Abu Dhabi. A run-flat can usually be driven up to about 80 km at a maximum of 80 km/h after losing pressure, but most tyre makers advise replacing rather than repairing it once it has run deflated. Our vans carry a tyre changer that handles the stiff sidewalls.
What a run-flat tyre is
A run-flat tyre has reinforced sidewalls stiff enough to carry the car's weight when there is no air inside. Instead of collapsing onto the rim after a puncture, it keeps its shape long enough for you to drive to safety. Car makers fit them so they can leave out the spare wheel, which saves weight and boot space.
In the UAE you find them on many BMW models — the 3 Series, 5 Series, X3 and X5 — as well as Minis and some Mercedes-Benz models. You can usually identify one by markings on the sidewall such as RFT, RSC, ROF, SSR, ZP or a circled "R". If your car has no spare wheel and no sealant kit, it almost certainly has run-flats.
How far you can drive on a run-flat
Most run-flats are designed to cover up to about 80 km at no more than 80 km/h after losing pressure. The exact figure is set by the tyre maker and can be lower with a heavy load. In practice that is enough to get from Jebel Ali to Al Barsha, or off the E311 to a safe place, but not from Dubai to Abu Dhabi.
Two UAE-specific points matter here. First, heat: a deflated run-flat flexes and gets hot, and summer road temperatures in Dubai add to that. Drive slower than the limit if you can. Second, you may not notice the puncture at all, which is why every car with run-flats must have a working tyre pressure monitoring system. If the TPMS light comes on, slow down and get the tyres checked; do not assume it is a false alarm.
If your TPMS warning appears on a car with run-flats, keep below 80 km/h and message us your location. A run-flat that has been driven too far or too fast can fail without warning, even though it still looks inflated.
Can a run-flat tyre be repaired
Usually not. Once a run-flat has been driven without pressure, the reinforced sidewall may be damaged internally in a way that cannot be seen from outside. Most tyre makers advise against repairing a run-flat that has run deflated, and we follow that advice. If the puncture was caught early, with the tyre still holding pressure, and the hole is in the central tread, a repair may be possible after inspection; the technician will tell you which applies.
Run-flat tyre prices
| Car | Common sizes | Price per tyre from (AED) |
|---|---|---|
| BMW 1 Series, Mini Cooper | 16–17 inch | 500 |
| BMW 3 Series, 4 Series | 17–19 inch | Quoted by size |
| BMW 5 Series, X3 | 18–19 inch | Quoted by size |
| BMW X5, X6 | 19–21 inch, often staggered | Quoted by size |
Fitting is AED 100 per visit. Many BMWs use staggered sizes — wider tyres on the rear than the front — so front and rear tyres cannot be swapped by rotation, and you may need different tyres for each axle. Brands we fit include Bridgestone, Pirelli, Continental, Michelin, Goodyear and Dunlop.
Switching from run-flats to normal tyres
Some owners replace run-flats with conventional tyres for a softer ride and lower price. It can be done, but think it through: the car has no spare, so you would need to carry a sealant kit or buy a spare and find room for it, and the suspension was tuned for stiff sidewalls. Never mix run-flats and conventional tyres on the same axle. If you are considering the switch, we will explain the trade-offs for your specific car before quoting.
Mobile fitting for run-flats
Run-flats are harder to fit than normal tyres because the stiff sidewall resists being pushed over the rim. Doing it with the wrong equipment can damage the bead or the TPMS sensor inside the wheel. Our vans carry a tyre changer that handles run-flats, and the technician checks each TPMS sensor while the tyre is off. If a sensor needs replacing, it is from AED 150 including programming. Replacing one run-flat or a pair
If only one run-flat is damaged and the others are fairly new, replacing a single tyre is possible, as long as it matches the brand and pattern of its partner on the same axle. If the others are worn, replace the pair on that axle so both sides grip evenly.

What UAE drivers say
-
Khalid Al Mansoori MirdifFlat tyre on the Patrol at 11 pm outside the house. Technician was there in 35 minutes, had the right 20-inch tyre in the van and finished in half an hour. Price was exactly what they told me on WhatsApp.
-
Priya Raman JLTBooked a set of four Michelins for my CR-V. They fitted them in the basement of my building while I was on calls. Showed me the manufacture date on each tyre before fitting, which nobody has ever done for me.
-
Mark Dela Cruz Al Nahda, SharjahScrew in my tyre on a Friday morning. They plugged it in the car park, checked the other three and set the pressures. AED 80, done in 20 minutes.
-
Sarah Whitfield Arabian RanchesPaid with Tabby for new tyres on the Range Rover — split into four, no interest. The guy was careful with the wheels and left the driveway cleaner than he found it.
Common questions
Common questions
How much do run-flat tyres cost in Dubai?
Run-flat tyres start at AED 500 per tyre for smaller sizes, with larger BMW X5 sizes quoted by size. Fitting is AED 100 per visit.
Can I replace run-flat tyres with normal tyres?
Yes, but you will have no spare and the ride and handling change. Never mix run-flat and normal tyres on the same axle.
How do I know if my car has run-flat tyres?
Look for RFT, RSC, ROF, SSR or ZP on the sidewall. A car with no spare wheel and no sealant kit almost always has run-flats.
Do run-flat tyres wear out faster?
They are heavier and stiffer, and many owners find they wear slightly faster than conventional tyres, especially on staggered BMW setups that cannot be rotated.
