The short answer
For UAE dune driving, an all-terrain (A/T) tyre is the right choice for most 4x4s — it handles sand at 15–18 psi and stays civil on the highway. Mud-terrain (M/T) tyres suit rock and wadi driving in Ras Al Khaimah and Hatta but are noisy on tarmac. Popular choices are BFGoodrich KO2/KO3, Yokohama Geolandar A/T G015, Toyo Open Country A/T III and Falken Wildpeak A/T3W, from AED 450 per tyre fitted.
All-terrain vs mud-terrain
Sand rewards a tyre that floats rather than digs. All-terrain tyres have tighter tread blocks and flexible sidewalls that spread out at low pressure — perfect for Al Qudra, Big Red and Liwa. Mud-terrain tyres have huge voids that clear mud and grip rock; they shine on Jebel Jais tracks and wadis but tend to dig into soft sand and are much louder on the highway.
Pressure for the desert
- Highway: placard pressure, 32–35 psi.
- Firm sand / gravel: 22–25 psi.
- Soft dunes: 15–18 psi.
- Recovery from bogging: as low as 12 psi, briefly.
Never drive on the highway at sand pressures — the sidewalls overheat and can delaminate.

Common questions
Common questions
What is the best tyre for desert driving in the UAE?
An all-terrain tyre such as the BFGoodrich KO2/KO3, Yokohama Geolandar A/T G015 or Toyo Open Country A/T III, run at 15–18 psi in soft sand.
Are mud-terrain tyres good in sand?
They work, but tend to dig. All-terrain tyres float better in dunes and are quieter on roads.
